I recently went to The Rum Kitchen with my friend Patricia for the first time.
I remember her talking to me about something but I couldn’t even concentrate on the words that were coming out of her mouth after I popped a salt fish fitter into my own.

I said “Hold up. Patricia, do you realise how bomb this food is?” (Quick elaboration; I use the word bomb to describe everything and anything that I find attractive or aesthetically pleasing) and she truthfully agreed.

First of all, what I liked was how prompt the service was. I hate getting to a restaurant only to find that the service is poor. That is not good customer service. I also dislike when food takes too long to come. I came because I was hungry and not because I wanted to sit on an uncomfortable chair and pay and unreasonable service charge to a bunch of lazy people. Feed me! (can you tell I get angry when I’m hungry?)

We had the ribs, chicken wings and salt fish fritters for our starter which were all cooked to perfection. Growing up in Harlesden, I’ll be the first to be able to identify when a salt fish fitter tastes like the bottom of your mums rubbery gardening shoes. Test me.

I opted for the jerk burger as my main course and Patricia had the curried mutton which was rich and perfectly seasoned. The jerk chicken burger was coated with a buttermilk outtershell still seasoned with Caribbean spices. With one forkful of the mutton, it was easy to assume that the mutton had been slow cooked in the fragrant coconut based curry and was accompanied by fluffy boiled potatoes (I need to be a food critic!) Honestly, I still find it very hard to fathom that the taste of Jamaica could be brought to Canarby street and still have that authentic flavour.

It’s good value for money and worth every pound. I highly recommend.
